A team of products liability injury attorneys and class action lawyers is investigating potential hair straightening lawsuit cases and settlement claims of women who have suffered from uterine fibroids after using chemical hair relaxer and hair straightening products.

Uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyomas or myomas) are non-cancerous (benign) tumors or growths that can develop in the uterus, including in the muscular uterine wall (intramural fibroids), inside the uterine cavity (submucosal fibroids) or on the outside of the uterus (subserosal fibroids and/or pedunculated fibroids).

According to the FDA, uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumor affecting women of childbearing age. Moreover, U.S. black women are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop uterine fibroids compared to U.S. white women. Unfortunately, studies have suggested that chemical hair relaxers (often used by African American women) may contain toxic chemicals that may be linked to the development of uterine fibroids.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology that examined health records of tens of thousands of pre-menopausal African American women from 1997 to 2009, women who regularly use chemical hair relaxers may have an increased risk of developing uterine fibroids as compared to women who do not use a hair relaxer.

Uterine Fibroid Signs & Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids can potentially include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Menstrual periods that last longer than a week
  • Painful periods
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Bloating
  • Feeling full in abdomen
  • Constipation
  • Backache or lower back pain
  • Leg pains
  • Other uterine fibroid symptoms or signs

Not all women with uterine fibroids experience symptoms. According to the Journal of Women’s Health, only approximately 25% to 50% of women with uterine fibroids are symptomatic (i.e., have symptoms).

Procedures and tests used by doctors (such as gynecologists) to diagnose uterine fibroids can include a pelvic exam, blood tests, ultrasonography, MRI, CT scan, hysteroscopy, hysterosalpingography HSG, sonohysterography and/or laparoscopy, among others.

Uterine Fibroid Complications

Complications from uterine fibroids can include anemia (low red blood cells), reproductive problems such as infertility and/or miscarriages, and obstetrical problems such as early onset labor and/or increased likelihood of Cesarean section during child birth, among others.

Uterine Fibroids Treatment

Treatment of uterine fibroids can vary depending on the number of fibroids present, the size of the fibroids, the location of the fibroids, the symptoms experienced, and/or fertility goals (such as the desire for pregnancy or uterine preservation). Uterine fibroid treatments can potentially include medication to treat pain, iron supplements to treat anemia, birth control to help with bleeding, medication to help shrink the fibroids and fibroid surgery, including a myomectomy (surgery to remove the fibroids without damaging the uterus, such as a hysteroscopy, laparoscopy or laparatomy), hysterectomy (surgery to remove the uterus), uterine fibroid embolization, radiofrequency ablation RFA, and MRI-guided focused ultrasound, among others.
