Multi district litigation or MDL litigation is special case management procedure in which complex civil lawsuits filed in federal district courts throughout the country are consolidated and transferred to one federal district court which acts as an MDL court.
MDL cases are formed when the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation determines that multiple civil lawsuits pending in different U.S. district dourts involve one or more common questions of fact and that consolidating and transferring them into an MDL will be for the convenience of parties and witnesses and will promote the just and efficient conduct of the pending lawsuits. 28 U.S.C. § 1407
The MDL court coordinates and oversees pretrial proceedings in the transferred cases including discovery and pre-trial motions, can approve settlement of certain cases, and can dismiss cases, among other things. Oftentimes, the MDL court will select several individual cases to be tried as bellwether cases, bellwether trials or test cases to help the parties evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the remaining MDL cases. Sometimes global settlements are reached between the parties. Other times, after pretrial proceedings conclude any remaining cases may be sent back to the original court of filing for individual trials.

Although MDL lawsuit cases frequently involve mass tort lawsuits, multi district litigation is not limited to mass tort cases. MDL cases can also include securities fraud cases, anti-trust cases, contract cases, employment cases, intellectual property cases, privacy lawsuits, and sales practices lawsuits, among others.
In addition to federal court MDLs, sometimes cases are consolidated in various state courts under analogous state coordinated proceedings.
