Carcinogens Found in Camp Lejeune Water
The toxic chemicals found in the Camp Lejeune water, included trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene or perchloroethylene (PCE or PERC), benzene, and vinyl chloride), among others.
According to the Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR), TCE, vinyl chloride, and benzene have all been classified as human carcinogens (i.e,. they can cause cancer), while PCE or PERC has been classified as a “likely” or “probable” human carcinogen (i.e., it likely can cause cancer).
Studies Link Camp Lejeune Water To Cancer
Moreover, numerous studies have identified a potential link between exposure to the toxic substances in Camp Lejeune’s drinking water and the development of various forms of cancer, leukemia and lymphoma.
For example, one study that looked at military personnel, their families, and civilian employees at Camp Lejeune who may have been exposed to contaminated drinking water found that contaminated drinking water at Camp Lejeune was linked to an increased risk of cancer, including bladder cancer and kidney cancer.
Similarly, another study that looked at Camp Lejeune civilian workers compared to a civilian worker population from Camp Pendleton (which did not have a contaminated drinking water supply), found that Camp Lejeune workers had higher mortality rates for causes of death from cancers, including breast cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, oral cavity cancer, prostate cancer, rectum cancer, leukemia and multiple myeloma.
