Breast Cancer Stages
There are five stages of breast cancer based upon the cancer’s characteristics (such as the size of the tumor, whether it is in the lymph nodes, whether it has spread to other areas in the body, etc.). In stage 0 breast cancer, the cancer begins to grow in the breast ducts or milk glands, but has not spread to other areas of the body (i.e., non-invasive breast cancers, such as DCIS ductal carcinoma in situ). In stage I breast cancer, the cancer has become invasive (the cancer cells have broken through to or invaded normal breast tissue) and has spread to fatty breast tissue or to a few lymph nodes. In stage II breast cancer, the cancer has grown bigger and/or had spread to a few more lymph nodes. In stage III breast cancer, the cancer has become more advanced and has spread to even more lymph nodes (near the underarm to collarbone), to lymph nodes deep in the breasts, and/or to the chest wall or skin of the breasts. In stage IV breast cancer, the cancer has metastasized to distant areas of the body such as the bones, lungs, brain and/or liver.
