Stomach Cancer Stages

There are five stages of stomach cancer. In stage I stomach cancer, cancer cells have spread through certain layers of cells in the stomach lining such as the lamina propria, the muscularis mucosa, or submucosa and/or has spread to 1-2 nearby lymph nodes, or it has spread to the the muscularis propria layer. In stage 2 stomach cancer, the cancer has grown through more or deeper layers of the stomach (such as the serosa) and/or into more lymph nodes. In stage 3 stomach cancer, the cancer has spread into even more layers of the stomach (such as the subserosa) and/or more lymph nodes and may have spread through the stomach wall to nearby organs such as the spleen or colon. In stage 4 stomach cancer, the cancer has metastasized to distant organs such as the liver, pancreas, bladder, stomach, lungs, brain, or the peritoneum (the membrane lining digestive organs).
