Lung Cancer Stages
There are 5 stages of lung cancer. In stage 0 lung cancer (carcinoma in situ), the cancer is small in size and remains inside the lungs in the top layers of cells lining the air passages. In stage I lung cancer, the cancer has invaded lung tissues (such as membranes surrounding the lungs or visceral pleura or main branches of the bronchi) but not lymph nodes and may be partially blocking airways. In stage II lung cancer, the cancer may have grown in size and/or spread to nearby lymph nodes in the lung and/or near the area where the bronchus enters the lung (hilar lymph nodes) or may have spread to the chest wall, the parietal pleura (the inner lining of the chest wall), the phrenic nerve, or parietal pericardium (membranes of the sac that surround the heart). In stage III lung cancer, the cancer may have spread to more lymph nodes including those around the carina (where the windpipe splits into the left and right bronchi) or mediastinum (the space between the lungs) and the space in the middle of the chest area near the heart, aorta (large blood vessels near heart), trachea (windpipe), esophagus, diaphragm, backbone, or carina. In stage IV lung cancer, the cancer has metastasized to other parts of the body such as the bones, liver, brain, adrenal glands, breasts, kidneys, stomach, or pancreas.
