Prostate cancer treatment can include surgery to remove the prostate (radical prostatectomy), surgery to remove cancerous tissue or lymph nodes, radiation therapy (i.e., external beam radiation or brachytherapy), cryoptherapy or cryoablation to freeze prostate tissue, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to heat prostate tissue, hormone therapy to reduce testosterone production (e.g., luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone LHRH or gonadotropin-releasing hormone GnRH agonists and antagonists, anti-androgens or removal of testicles or orchiectomy), chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted drug therapy.

Prostate Cancer Stages

There are four prostate cancer stages. In stage I prostate cancer, the cancer remains inside the prostate gland and is not usually seen via imaging tests or felt via a rectal exam but may be found accidently during other medical procedures. In stage II prostate cancer, the cancer remains inside the prostate gland and can be seen in imaging tests and can be felt during a rectal exam. In stage III prostate cancer, the cancer has spread outside the prostate and may have grown to the seminal vesicles. In stage IV prostate cancer, the cancer has metastasized to other parts of the body, such as the rectum, bladder, urethral sphincter, bones, liver, lungs, kidneys, brain, pancreas, lymph nodes or pelvic wall.
