If you or a loved one were diagnosed with interstitial lung disease after using a recalled Philips CPAP, BiPAP or ventilator machine, you may be entitled to recover compensation from a CPAP interstitial lung disease lawsuit case or settlement claim.
A team of medical device injury attorneys and class action lawyers is investigating potential lawsuit cases and settlement claims of individuals who were diagnosed with interstitial lung disease after using a CPAP, BiPap or ventilator machine recalled by Philips Respironics.
Interstitial lung disease is group of lung disorders that cause the interstitium of the lungs (a lace-like network of tissue that supports the lungs’ tiny air sacs or alveoli) to thicken or become “stiff” due to inflammation, scarring or fluid buildup, making it difficult to breath.
It has been estimated that more than 650,000 people in the United States suffer from interstitial lung disease and that each year about 21,500 people in the U.S. are expected to die from interstitial lung disease.
CPAP Interstitial Lung Disease Lawsuit Cases
CPAP interstitial lung disease lawsuit cases and settlement claims potentially being investigated include claims of patients who, after using a recalled Philips C-PAP, Bi-PAP or ventilator (e.g., DreamStation, C-Series, Dorma, OmniLab AdvancedPlus, REMstar, System One, A-Series, Garbin Plus, Aeris, LifeVent or Trilogy) suffered from interstitial lung disease, including the following lung conditions:
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Pulmonary sarcoidosis
- Pulmonary edema
- Pneumoconiosis
- Pneumonia
- Diffuse parenchymal lung diseases
- Other interstitial lung diseases
On June 14, 2021, the FDA announced that Philips was recalling certain Philips CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilators because of potential health concerns, including respiratory issues, relating to exposure of particulates from degraded polyester-based polyurethane sound abatement foam in the recalled machines.
Interstitial Lung Disease Signs & Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of interstitial lung disease can potentially include:
- Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
- Dry cough
- Chest discomfort
- Chest pain
- Exhaustion or fatigue
- Unintended weight loss
- Joint or muscle pain
- Other interstitial lung disease symptoms
Procedures and tests used by doctors (such as pulmonologists) to diagnose interstitial lung disease can include family history, medical history, physical examination, chest X-ray, CT scans, lung function tests (such as spirometry, oximetry and diffusion capacity to to assess total lung capacity), lung biopsy, bronchoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, lung plethysmography, and blood tests, among others.
Interstitial Lung Disease Complications
Interstitial lung disease can potentially lead to serious complications including hypoxemia (below-normal level of oxygen in blood), respiratory failure, right-sided heart failure (cor pulmonale), pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in lungs), gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), pulmonary embolism, loss of muscle tone, lung infections, pneumonia, lung cancer, and/or death, among other things.
Treatments for Interstitial Lung Disease
Lung damage, such as scarring from interstitial lung disease, is often permanent and irrereversible. Treatment for interstitial lung disease, which may slow the progression of disease or alleviate symptoms, can include, corticosteroid medications (to suppress the immune system), medications to slow the progression of pulmonary fibrosis, medications to treat heartburn, antiobiotics, oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehab, lifestyle changes, and surgery (i.e., lung transplantation), among others.
