CPAP Pulmonary Edema Lawsuit: Were You or a Loved One Diagnosed With Pulmonary Edema After Using a CPAP, BiPAP or Ventilator Recalled By Philips?

CPAP Pulmonary Edema Lawsuit cases settlement claims

If you or a loved one were diagnosed with pulmonary edema after using a CPAP, BiPAP or ventilator machine recalled by Philips, you may be entitled to recover compensation from a CPAP pulmonary edema lawsuit case or settlement claim.

A team of medical device injury lawyers and class action attorneys is investigating potential lawsuit cases and settlement claims of individuals who were diagnosed with pulmonary edema after using a CPAP, BiPap or ventilator machine recalled by Philips Respironics.

Pulmonary edema (PE, pulmonary congestion or wet lung) is a restrictive lung disease in which excess fluid accumulates in the lung parenchyma (the portion of the lungs involved in gas exchange consisting of a large number of thin-walled alveoli) making it difficult to breathe.

Pulmonary edema may be caused by lung damage (non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema) from inhalation of toxic gases and particulates. One of most recognized form of noncardiogenic pulmonary edema is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which has an acute onset caused by an underlying inflammatory process.

CPAP Pulmonary Edema Lawsuit Cases

CPAP pulmonary edema lawsuit cases and settlement claims potentially being investigated include claims of patients who were diagnosed with pulmonary edema after using a C-PAP, Bi-PAP or ventilator machine recalled by Philips (such as a DreamStation, C-Series, Dorma, OmniLab AdvancedPlus, REMstar, System One, A-Series, Garbin Plus, Aeris, LifeVent or Trilogy ventilator device).

On June 14, 2021, it was announced that Philips respironics had issued a recall of certain of its CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilator machines because of possible health risks, including potential respiratory complications, relating to exposure of particulates from degraded polyester-based polyurethane sound abatement foam.

Pulmonary Edema Signs & Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of pulmonary edema can potentially include:

  • Difficulty breathing (dyspnea)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Feeling of suffocating
  • Feeling of drowning
  • Excessive coughing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Pink, Frothy Sputum
  • Rapid weigh gain
  • Swelling in lower extremities
  • Fatigue
  • Bluish nails or skin
  • Cold clammy skin
  • Anxiety or restlessness
  • Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea
  • Sudden breathlessness at night
  • Crackle sound after inhaling
  • Excessive sweating
  • Inability to lie down flat (orthopnea)

Procedures and tests used to diagnose pulmonary edema can include physical examination, chest X-ray, chest CT scan, pulse oximetry, arterial blood gas test (to check the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood), blood tests (such as a b-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) blood test to check for heart conditions), electrocardiagram (ECG or EKG), echocardiogram, cardiac catheterization and coronary angiogram, and ultrasound of the lungs (to measure blood flow through the lungs and to check for fluid buildup and plural effusions), among others.

Pulmonary Edema Complications

Pulmonary edema can potentially lead to serious complications including pleural effusion (buildup of fluid in membranes surrounding the lungs), congestion and swelling of the liver, pulmonary hypertension (an increase in pressure in the pulmonary artery), hypoxia (diminished oxygen supply to tissues), heart failure, respiratory failure, and death, among others.

Treatments for Pulmonary Edema

Treatment for pulmonary edema can include supplemental oxygen therapy (and other breathing support therapies), diuretics (to decrease pressure caused by excess fluid in lungs), lifestyle changes, vasodilators (to help improve blood flow) and other medications (to relieve shortness of breath, anxiety, lower blood pressure, etc.), among others.

If you or someone you love suffered from pulmonary edema after using a C-PAP or Bi-PAP machine or ventilator device, you may be entitled to recover compensation from a CPAP pulmonary edema lawsuit case or settlement claim. Contact a medical device injury lawyer to request a free case review.
