If you or a loved one were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using a recalled Philips CPAP, BiPAP or ventilator machine, you may be entitled to recover compensation from a CPAP non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuit case or settlement claim.
A team of medical device injury lawyers and class action attorneys is investigating potential lawsuit cases and settlement claims of individuals who were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using or being treated with a recalled Philips CPAP, BiPap or ventilator.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a group of more than 60 types of blood cancers that form in lymphocytes (white blood cells of the immune system that defend the body against viruses, parasites, bacteria and foreign substances) that begin to grow out of control. Lymphocytes are located in tissues and organs of the body but are concentrated in the bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes (bean-sized collections of lymphocytes and immune system cells throughout the body).
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 81,500 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases are estimated to be diagnosed each year in the U.S. and more than 20,700 people are expected to die from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the U.S. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is one of the most common cancers in the United States.

Philips respironics issued a recall of certain Bi-PAP, CPAP, and ventilator devices due to potential health risks related to the polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam in the devices, including possible toxic and carcinogenic effects. Recalled Philips CPAP, BiPAP or ventilators include DreamStation, C-Series, Dorma CPAP, OmniLab Advanced+, REMstar CPAP, SystemOne, A-Series BiPAP, Garbin Plus, Aeris, LifeVent Ventilator, Trilogy Ventilator and E30 devices.
Types of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas can be categorized by the type of lymphocyte that the cancer starts in. For instance, cancer that develops in B-lymphocytes (white blood cells that make proteins or antibodies to help the body fight bacteria and germs) are known as B-cell lymphomas, whereas as cancer that develops in T-lymphocytes (white blood cells that seek out and destroy germs) are known as T-cell lymphomas. B-cell lymphomas account for about 85-90 percent of all non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases, while T-cell lymphomas (including natural killer (NK)-cell lymphomas) account for 10%-15% of non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas can also be classified by how fast the cancer grows and spreads. For example, indolent lymphomas (which account for about 40% of all non-hodgkin lymphoma cases) tend to grow and spread slowly, while aggressive lymphomas (which account for about 60% of all non-hodgkin lymphoma cases) tend to grow and spread quickly.
Aggressive B-cell lymphomas include:
- Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
- Lymphoblastic lymphoma
- Burkitt lymphoma (BL)
- Primary mediastinal (thymic) large B-cell lymphoma (PMBCL)
- Transformed follicular and transformed mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas
- High-grade B-cell lymphoma with double or triple hits (HBL)
- Primary cutaneous DLBCL, leg type
- Primary DLBCL of the central nervous system
- Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma
Indolent B-cell lymphomas include:
- Follicular lymphoma (FL)
- Marginal zone lymphoma (MZL)
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
- Small-cell lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL)
- Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma
- Lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma
- Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM)
- Nodal marginal zone lymphoma (NMZL)
- Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL)
Certain B-cell lymphomas, such as mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), can present as aggressive or indolent.
Aggressive T-cell lymphomas (and natural killer NK lymphomas) include:
- Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), not otherwise specified
- Systemic anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL)
- Lymphoblastic lymphoma
- Hepatosplenic gamma/delta T-cell lymphoma
- Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL)
- Enteropathy-type intestinal T-cell lymphoma
- Primary cutaneous anaplastic large-cell lymphoma
- Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL)
Indolent T-cell lymphomas (and natural killer NK lymphomas) include:
- Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL)
- Mycosis fungoides (MF)
- Sézary syndrome (SS)
- Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma
- Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENK/TCL), nasal type
Signs & Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Signs and symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma can include:

- Abdominal swelling

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma complications can include, among others, infections, disseminated intravascular coagulation (abnormal blood clotting in blood vessels), superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome (obstruction of blood flow the SVC vein), autoimmune hemolytic anemia (malfunction of immune system), cytopenias (low blood cells), increased risk of developing other cancers, cardiac or heart problems, respiratory problems, kidney issues, thyroid issues, depression, bleeding, cancer metastasis to other parts of the body and/or death.
Tools and procedures used by a blood cancer specialist or hematologist-oncologist to diagnose non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma can include a medical history, family history, physical exam, blood tests, urine tests, imaging tests (chest x-ray, CT scan, PET scan, MRI, etc.), immunophenotyping, flow cytometry, cytogenetic analysis, gene expression profiling, lumbar puncture (spinal tap), lymph node biopsy (to check for abnormal cells called Reed-Sternberg cells), and/or bone marrow biopsy.
Treatments for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Treatments for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma can include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted drug therapy, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, bone marrow transplant, among others.
