If you or a loved one were diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (“COPD”) after vaping, Juuling or using an e-cigarette, you may be entitled to recover compensation from a COPD lawsuit or settlement.
A team of products liability injury lawyers and class action attorneys is investigating potential vaping lawsuit and settlement claims of individuals who were diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) after vaping, Juuling or using e-cigarettes.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a type of progressive lung disease (i.e., it typically worsens over time) that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs which makes it harder to breathe. With COPD less air is able to flow in and out of the lungs because the airways lose elastic quality, the walls of the airways become too thick or have inflammation, the walls between air sacs can be damaged or destroyed and/or the airways become clogged with too much mucus.
Tobacco smoking is the most common cause of COPD. COPD can also be caused by long term exposure to other lung irritants, toxins, poisons and substances. Indeed, researchers have found evidence linking e-cigarette use with COPD. According to a study, e-cigarette users were about twice as likely to have COPD as non e-cigarette users.
COPD includes lung diseases such as emphysema (caused by damage to the alveoli or air sacs resulting in less oxygen absorbtion), chronic bronchitis (cause by damage, irritation or swelling of the bronchial tubes), and refractory (non-reversible) asthma (asthma that does not respond to usual asthma medications). COPD is one of the leadings causes of death in the United States.
Types of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Lawsuit Cases
COPD lawsuit and settlement cases potentially being investigated include claims of individuals who were diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, e.g., COPD, after vaping or using an e-cigarette.
COPD Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of COPD can include:
- Shortness of breath (Dyspnea)
- Breathing that requires effort
- Feeling out of breath
- Feeling like cannot get enough air
- Cough that produces mucus
- Frequent coughing (with or without mucus)
- Difficulty breathing deeply
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Sputum production (coughed up phlegm)
- Rib fractures from coughing
- Brief loss of consciousness from coughing

COPD can be diagnosed with the help of a spirometry test (part of a pulmonary function test that measures the amount of air that can be forcefully breathed out), chest x-rays, and chest CT scans. There is not yet a cure for COPD, but COPD treatments (such as medicines, surgery, lung transplant or oxygen therapy) may be able to help relieve certain COPD symptoms.
