A team of injury lawyers and class action attorneys is investigating potential vape and e-cigarette lawsuit and settlement claims of individuals who suffered from pneumonia after vaping.

Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation of the air sacs (called alveoli) in the lungs. There are several types of pneumonia: walking pneumonia (mild or atypical usually due to a bacterium called mycoplasma pneumoniae), viral pneumonia (due to the influena flu virus, respiratory synctial virus RSV, coronaviruse, rhinoviruse, parainfluenza virus, adenoviruses, etc.), bacterial pneumonia or pneumococcal pneumonia (due to streptococcus or pneumococcus), and chemical pneumonia (inflammation of lung tissue due to poisons or toxins, including liquids, gases, small particles, etc).

Types of Vaping Pneumonia Lawsuit Cases

Vaping pneumonia lawsuit and settlement cases potentially being investigated include claims of individuals, including young adults and teenage children, who suffered from pneumonia after vaping or using e-cigarettes, including, among others:

  • acute eosinophilic pneumonia
  • lipoid pneumonia
  • chemical pneumonia
  • other potential types of pneumonia

According to the Centers for Disease Control (“CDC”), acute lipoid pneumonia (a rare type of infection caused by lipids or fatty acids in the lungs) has been described from aspiration of oil into the lungs and has been associated with e-cigarette use in some case reports. Several case reports have also reportedly associated vaping with acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) a rare disorder characterized by the rapid accumulation of eosinophils in the lungs (called pulmonary eosinophilia), a type of white blood cell used by the immune system.

According to a study, e-cigarettes and vaping may also increase susceptibility to pneumonia-causing bacteria due to free radicals that have the potential to induce oxidative stress in the airway cells leading to an increase in production of a protein called platelet-activating factor receptor (“PAFR”), which is used by pneumococci bacteria to stick to the airway, potentially increasing the risk of infection.
